In the Carneros Appellation of Napa Valley, an area known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, you will find Leo Peck’s ClayLights studio. ClayLights rolls, carves, stamps, cuts, brushes, sprays , glazes and creates soft, illuminating translucent porcelain light fixtures. A larger slab of a mid-range clay is produced as a back tile, and the high-fire porcelain tile is then affixed to the back tile, which is then mounted to the steel box that houses the lighting fixture(s) and bulbs. The lighting used varies from halogen, fluorescent, incandescent and LEDs.
I have been working in clay for over 35 years. After starting my ceramics career as a functional potter, I ventured into an exciting journey of custom tile and furniture. In recent years, my design goal, which I have now achieved, has been to create functional ceramics – creating light fixtures by merging the translucency of porcelain and my carving, stamping, and glazing designs onto large tiles. Producing the light fixtures brought functional ceramics to a very interesting and enjoyable level for me. I enjoy how they transform their surroundings and enhance their environment.
